Air Fryer Falafel

( Easy Homemade Falafel, can also be pan fried )


You will need

  • Mixing bowl

  • A Food Processor ( Makes life easier, or you need good chopping skills)

  • Potato Masher

Falafel Ingredients

  • 1 (15 ounce) can chickpeas (garbanzo beans), drained

  • 1 onion, finely diced

  • ½ cup fresh parsley ( or cilantro will also work )

  • 2 cloves minced garlic

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 Tbsp ground cumin

  • 1 tsp salt

  • 1 dash pepper

  • 1 dash cayenne

  • 1 tsp lemon juice

  • 1 tsp baking powder

  • 1 Tbsp olive oil

  • 1 cup dry bread crumbs

Cucumber Sauce ( Optional )

  • 6 oz plain yogurt

  • ½ cucumber – peeled, seeded & finely diced

  • 1 tsp dill weed

  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions


  • In a large bowl mash chickpeas until thick and pasty; don't use a blender, as the consistency will be too thin.

  • In a food processor, process onion, parsley and garlic until smooth.




  • Stir into mashed chickpeas.

  • In a small bowl combine egg, cumin, coriander, salt, pepper, cayenne, lemon juice and baking powder.

  • Stir into chickpea mixture along with olive oil.

  • Slowly add bread crumbs until mixture is not sticky but will hold together; add more or less bread crumbs, as needed.




  • Form into balls and then flatten into patties.



  • Cook in air fryer, at 400F / 200 C, for about 8 minutes, flipping halfway through.

  • OR

  • Heat 1 inch of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry patties in hot oil until brown on both sides.

Instructions for sauce

  • In a small bowl combine yogurt, cucumber, dill, salt, pepper and mix well. Chill for at least 30 minutes.


Notes

Can be served in a pita, with lettuce, tomato, onion, feta cheese and sauce, or whatever you like, or just served as a snack, with or without sauce.
