Or, Cuban Sandwich Pizza
From a frozen loaf of bread to a delicious south Miami flavor, see how easy it is to bring that Cuban flavor to your dinner table.
Hopefully, at some point, you have had the opportunity to have a Cubano Sandwich. They are a rich, savory, tangy, cheesy hot grilled sandwich, that originated in Cuba, but has been popularized in Miami and Tampa regions of Florida over the past century. It has simple ingredients, but with a very distinct flavor profile.
You will need
A bowl to thaw dough in.
12” Cast Iron Skillet (see notes for other methods)
Ingredients
Frozen Bread Dough Loaf ( or your favorite pizza dough ) Thawed
3 tablespoons yellow mustard
1 cup ham
2 cups pulled pork
8 ounces or so of Swiss cheese ( I used slices )
½ cup of chopped pickles, traditionally dill, but use what you like
3 Tbsp of olive or vegetable oil
Instructions
Place a 12-inch cast-iron skillet in the oven and preheat to 500 F / 260 C.
Meanwhile, roll or stretch the dough into a 14-inch circle. Carefully remove the skillet from the oven. Drizzle two thirds of the olive oil into the skillet, then carefully transfer the dough to the skillet, pressing the dough up the edges.
Spread the mustard over the dough, making sure to get all the way to the edges.
OK, in these photos, the mustard doesn't look yellow enough. The reason being, I had mixed it with some mayo, assuming the mustard on it's own would be too strong. I was wrong. Just use mustard, it really needs that bite. We had to add mustard at the end to get the correct flavor.
Layer the pork and ham over the mustard.
Top with the Swiss cheese.
Brush the exposed dough with the remaining olive oil.
Bake on the bottom rack until golden brown, 12 to 15 minutes, or until cheese is bubbly and crust is cooked through.
Transfer to a cutting board, top with chopped pickles, cut into slices and serve.
And just so you can see how crispy the crust turned out...( NO Pizza was harmed for this photo, it was righted and still eaten. )
Notes
Use any shredded pork you like, mine was leftover crock pot pulled pork. Mojo seasoned or carnita meat would be a good choice, but just a smoked pork will work well. I would not recommend any with BBQ sauce already added, but again, your pizza, do what you want.
The ham could be any, even lunch meat, just use what you would eat.
If you don't have a cast iron skillet, you could use a pizza stone, you just need to assemble on a pizza peel that has been dusted with cornmeal, so you can get it into the oven. Or on a sheet of parchment paper, also use the peel to transfer it to the oven. I have not tried it, but a pizza baking pan should work, just adjust your time to make sure the crust gets done.
